Future Vision of Nursing 2040
- Nursing Supports and Sustains Human Life, Living and Dignity -

Introduction

Over the past decade, as envisioned in our Future Vision of Nursing of 2015, there has been steady progress in establishing a community-based integrated care system and shifting from hospital-based medicine to community-based medicine, which integrates healthcare with living. In this context, as the closest healthcare profession to people, nursing plays a pivotal role in supporting people's recuperation within the community. In light of the projected transformation of society and healthcare by 2040, the next target year, we present a new Future Vision of Nursing. This vision articulates the direction nursing should take in response to these changes and the actions necessary to realize it.

In June 2015, the Japanese Nursing Association (JNA) released its "Future Vision of Nursing: Nursing that Supports and Sustains Human Life, Living, and Dignity" for the year 2025, and has been working to realize this vision ever since. As stated in the vision, the value of nursing professionals to "see people not only from the perspective of ‘medicine’ for caring disease, but also from the perspective of ‘life’" will remain unwavering in the future.

The year 2040 will be the next target year for social security reform in Japan due to a rapidly decreasing working-age population combined with an increasing number of elderly people aged 85 years or older. While the aging of the population has already peaked in some rural areas, the urban population will rapidly age in the coming years. This change will significantly impact the Japanese society and local communities.

At the same time, technological innovation, particularly the advancement of digital transformation (DX) using digital technology and data, will bring about unprecedented conditions that will exceed conventional values to the environment surrounding people, and to their daily lives and work styles. Furthermore, the concepts of diversity and inclusion, which emphasize mutual respect and support for diverse individuality, will be firmly established as values in society.

The healthcare and long-term care required will also change dramatically. This change, which is something we never experienced before, will provide an opportunity for nursing professionals to maximize their abilities and broaden the scope of activities as the closest healthcare professionals to the people. In order to support the health and lives of all people, it is necessary to make a shift in thinking that goes beyond conventional practices and existing frameworks.

The JNA hereby publishes a new future vision to enable the nursing profession to continue to provide nursing that supports and sustains human life, living and dignity, and to realize a society in which all people can live their lives that suit them. The JNA clearly presents to nursing professionals and the public the new direction nursing should take toward 2040, the role nursing should play in the future, and the actions necessary to realize it, aiming at inspiring all nursing professionals to take action to realize it and to gain the understanding and cooperation of the public.
